Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas produced by malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, ovens, stoves, gas dryers, and emergency generators. Check the batteries every spring and fall (at the beginning and end of daylight saving time, as a reminder). Install carbon monoxide detectors in every bedroom.Check the detectors monthly to be sure they're working, and change the batteries at least once a year or choose smoke alarms that use long-life (ten-year) batteries. Look for gates that your child can't dislodge, but that you can easily open and close.You can also use baby gates to block off dangerous rooms or areas, and to create a safe space to contain your child.Instead, install a gate that screws to the wall – it's much more secure. Never use pressure gates at the top of stairs. Install baby gates for stairs at the top and bottom of stairways.Stow logs, matches, and fireplace tools out of reach. ![]() Install a fireplace grill and keep it in place when a fire's burning.Make sure rugs don't have curling edges that your child (or you) can trip on.Block openings wider than 4 inches on railings with plastic garden fencing, Plexiglas, or other material. If your blinds or shades have cords and you can't replace them, shorten or tie up cords to ensure they're well out of reach. Use cordless window coverings, because cords can pose a strangulation risk to young children.Keep windows locked when they're closed.The guards should fit snugly but not so securely that an older child or adult can't remove them in case of an emergency. Or, install window guards that have bars no more than 4 inches apart. To childproof your windows, install window stops to prevent them from opening more than 4 inches.Make sure your child can't reach or open any window more than 4 inches. Keep your child's crib or bed, and all other furniture, away from windows.Breathing, massage and finding a focal object are all things each pregnant woman can practice in class with her birth partner. Explain and show pictures or videos of the different types of pain management. Each person has a different threshold and tolerance, and this is where pain management comes in. When you keep pinching and the person finally asks them to stop, that is their pain tolerance. When the person says that it hurts, that is the pain threshold. Lightly pinch the volunteer on the arm while you explain the difference. Pain management during labor is something that most women are concerned about, especially if they have never had children before.Įxplain the difference between a person's pain threshold and pain tolerance by asking for a volunteer. ![]() There are many ways partners can help distract the pregnant woman during the very early stages of labor, before she needs to head in to the hospital, such as playing board games, watching a favorite movie, or even providing a bubble bath to relax if her water hasn't broken yet.
